BRIARCREST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
High, Middle, and Elementary Schools
Fleming Architects has provided the master plan, architectural and interior design services for all of the Houston Levee campus since 1997. The master plan has evolved over the years based on Briarcrest Christian Schools’ rapid growth and changing needs. The campus includes Briarcrest High School as well as the new Middle and Elementary School, providing Briarcrest families with a “one stop shop” for their K-12 education. A well thought out master plan with wayfinding allows this massive campus to function efficiently. The Orchard Church uses portions of the facilities for church functions and fits well within the organization and layout of the campus. Fleming continues to work with BCS on future needs for their multi-use campus.
“We have used Fleming Architects on every building campaign we have had at the Houston Levee Main Campus. The architects and designers were easy to work with, they listened, and have always been responsive to our needs and requests.”
- Beth Rooks, Director of Communications Briarcrest Christian School
MADONNA LEARNING CENTER
Madonna Learning Center is a private school for children and young adults with disabilities. Fleming Architects renovated the existing 2 story 12,500 SF building, including new flooring, paint, windows, and cabinets. We also designed a new 27,750 SF addition consisting of an admin area with offices and a conference room, 3 classrooms, an art room, a dance room, and a gymnasium. An inner courtyard is a focal point from the entry lobby. Fleming also designed a new separate building for the Adult Program with 4 classrooms, modeled on corporate conference rooms, a residential-style kitchen, and a recreation room. The buildings are connected with covered walkways to facilitate use of the entire campus by the student body. Two new playgrounds were included, one for older students between the addition and the Adult Program and one for younger students near the addition.
WINDLAND SMITH RICE BUILDING
Middle School Building
St. Mary’s Episcopal School enlisted Fleming Architects to design and oversee the construction of a new Middle School building that, in addition to much needed classroom space, included a state of the art Library designed to meet the demands of the entire student population. The new three story Windland Smith Rice Building houses a new Library on its first floor, providing ample classroom space for the school’s 4th – 8th graders on its two remaining floors. In honor of its namesake, Wendy Smith Rice, a renowned nature photographer, the building’s walls are adorned with an impressive photography collection and the lobby features photography-related motifs, which include a custom designed metal and glass staircase, resembling an unwinding roll of film. Additionally, the lobby’s terrazzo floor is patterned to look like a camera aperture, and it is highlighted by a translucent fiberglass ceiling panel above, reminiscent of a camera lens, that allows natural light to flood the space. The Library itself features two computer labs, a distance learning lab, eight self-check-out stations, and four study rooms, complete with whiteboards and wireless internet access.
"The Fleming Architects team, from day one, has earned our trust by being keen listeners and gracious collaborators in achieving the best design within our budget. The design process and construction coordination was collegial, flexible, and fun. Their meticulous attention to detail gave us confidence that they shared our priorities for aesthetics, functionality, and cost. The final result is an outstanding building that elicits consistent praise for both its beauty and thoughtful planning …"
- Albert Throckmorton, Head of School - St. Mary's Episcopal School
